Collectible Figurines

Collectible figurines have always been a favorite among collectors for the simple reason that they are a great way to bring little pieces of art into your home and often feature sweet and endearing characters that you can't help but fall in love with.

Some of the most easily recognized lines of collectible figurines have been favorites for many years now, so it's no surprise that every day they gain more and more followers.

The popularity and universal appeal of Walt Disney's movies and cartoons have naturally led to a series of beloved figurines that depict his classic characters and scenes in different mediums from pewter to porcelain.

Always conscious of the fact that Disney fans come from all different budgets and in all different ages, there are collectable figurines in every price rangefrom inexpensive and mass produced to the higher end limited editions that can command prices into the thousands.

Fairies are another type of collectible figurine that is becoming more and more popular, especially with younger generations. This isn't to say that there aren't older fans who also love them, but there does seem to be a definite trend toward the younger market driving these sales. There are as many different kinds of fairy and fantasy statues as there are people who love them, but the most popular ones are those that represent different elements or personalities. A good example of this is the Fairy Divas collection, whose fiery and funny countenances are always a top choice among serious and casual collectors alike.

Even more popular with a wide range of collectors are angel figurines, which come in a wider variety of sizes, shapes and materials than one can almost imagine. Many other popular collectible pieces incorporate the angel theme into their line, giving the collector an incredible range of choices to broaden their collection.

One of the first names that comes to mind when you think of collectible figurines would have to be Hummel figurines. These round faced, innocent kids are a perennial favorite among collectors, and their almost unlimited variety of poses and personalities makes it easy to love them at first sight. After being in production for more than sixty years, pieces are still being created from her original drawings under supervision of the convent where she lived and all of them bear the beloved artist's signature to this day.

The Hummel line of figurines aren't the only porcelain figurines to be produced by the Goebel company, however. For some of the finest pieces featuring birds and animals, you needn't look any further than the distinguished Goebel figurines, which were mostly produced in the years before Sister Hummel's signature pieces were created. Goebel figurines are high quality and have a classic look that appeals to almost everyone who sees them.

Precious Moments are one of the most long lived favorites when it comes to collectable figurines, since creator Sam Butcher began drawing the endearing children as gifts for family and friends more than twenty five years ago. These days, his Precious Moments figurines are sold in hundreds of locations around the world and are among the most recognized collectable figurines in existence. Enesco Corporation offered to develop a three-dimensional figurine based on the artwork Love One Another in the 1970's, and since then the sweethearts with the trademark teardrop shaped eyes have been given in record numbers to people wishing to commemorate special occasions or simply show someone how much they care.

Wee Forest Folk are some of the cutest mice you'll ever meet, and their popularity with collectors proves it. Over 30 years ago, Annette Petersen created her first little mouse figurine, and since then, all the Wee Forest Folk figurines are made entirely in Massachusetts, making them one of the last truly American owned and operated small scale collectible operations. Among the most popular designs are the patriotic versions of previously beloved pieces, restyled and repainted to show off the good old red white and blue!

Cherished Teddies may not have been on the market as long as some of the other collectible figurines discussed, but they already have quite a reputation among collectors for being well made and very...well, cherished! Originally based on the illustrations of noted children's author Priscilla Hillman, the Teddies have been a hit since they were first introduced just over a decade ago, an unusually quick rise to the top in the world of figurines. They are loved for many of thesame reasons as Precious moments figurines, and are often used to commemorate special occasions as well.

The best thing about collectible figurines is the fact that there are such a wide range of styles and lines being produced that it is easy for almost anyone to get started on a collection of their own. Most of the popular ones such as Lladro figurines are also very widely available, giving new and experienced collectors an equal chance of finding their favorite characters without having to scour different sources just to get going.

Best of all, you'll be starting a hobby that will give you and possibly your children (and grandchildren!) years and years of enjoyment. So which figurine is YOUR favorite?
