Hot Wheels Cars & Toys
It doesn't matter if you're five or fifty-five years old, Hot Wheels cars are a perennial favorite among die cast car collectors around the world. They are considered by some to be the perfect toy, since they are inexpensive enough for kids to buy with their allowance and yet detailed enough for the serious car collector to appreciate.
Die cast cars have been around since the turn of the century, but it was only in 1966 that Ruth and Elliot Handler (who were actually the founders of the Mattel Company) first thought about designing a sleeker and more stylish looking toy car than was available at the time. That same year, Hot Wheels toys were born when they released 16 different cars that boasted several improvements over their predecessors, with the most important being that they were better looking and could go much faster than the older, bulkier models.
The very first Hot Wheels car created was a miniature version of the Chevrolet Camaro, which was soon followed by their model of the Corvette which is not the most popular vehicle in the line's history. Every year, new Hot wheels cars are being designed and their popularity shows no sign of declining. In fact, they have sold over two billion cars since the first one was rolled off the line and there's no hint that they will stop anytime soon.
There's more than just cars for the HotWheels lover, though. There are other Hot Wheels collectibles for both the collector and the casual fan, from lunch boxes and backpacks printed with the familiar flaming logo to the more upscale limited edition Hot Wheels toys that are made just for the older collector's market.
And of course, you can't forget the most exciting of all Hot Wheels collectibles...the race tracks! The first Hot Wheels tracks were simple pieces of interlocking plastic designed to give the die cast cars a place to call their own and simulate the feel of a real live racetrack. The newer models, however, feature more elaborate setups with loop the loops and motorized launch pads on the track to propel the cars over daredevil style jumps and canyons, making them a fun and easy way to show off your collection and get those wheels rolling.
With their continued popularity, it's easy to find Hot Wheels toys at any hobby or toy store, but if you're looking for one of the older, rarer models you'd do better to go online or try a specialty collector's shop. In mint or excellent condition, some of these older pieces can put quite a dent in your pocketbook, but for many collectors of Hot Wheels toys it's a small price to pay, literally.
If you've found some old Hot Wheels cars from your childhood in the attic or garage, you might be wondering if they're worth anything to a collector. Unfortunately, unless they are unopened or in perfect condition, most "found" models are worth more in sentimental value than anything else. However, it's best to check one of the many price guides to tell you exactly what you're looking at before you write them off as worthless. Be sure you have the most current price guide available as well, since values can change and fluctuate from year to year.
Thanks to Hot Wheels, anyone can easily own their dream car without breaking the bank, so why not give in to that little voice in your head and buy the Ferrari you've always wanted or own your very own replica of your favorite NASCAR vehicle? If nothing else, it'll be one car that you don't have to worry about paying insurance on!
