She sits comfortably on the broad quilted back of a white goose dressed up with a frilly pink hat. Mother Goose reads a book of nursery rhymes as she passes quietly over the children in the homes below. This “Mother Goose Figurine” is available as of January 2007, joining an impressive array of collectibles created by the talented Jim Shore. Jim Shore spent his youth in South Carolina where, under the guidance of creative parents, he was exposed to the simple folk art and quilting traditions of the people in the area. These influences can still be seen in his many beautiful creations – Jim Shore deer, cats, roosters, and many other animals, people, Christmas decorations, home accents, and angels. Most Jim Shore collectibles are made from stone resin: all are beautifully designed and delightfully decorated. Jim Shore angels are a group of figurines that stand apart from the rest of his art. These beautiful angels, clearly inspired by American folk art, have decorative wings spread and voluminous skirts painted with quilt patterns. There is something so peaceful and pleasing about them that one wants to collect them all. That would be difficult—typical of Jim Shore collectibles, many of them are limited edition and are no longer available except from other collectors who wish to trade. Animals, such as rabbits, deer, dogs, cats and other creatures are as numerous, but more varied than the angels. Like Jim Shore angels, they display the distinct folk art style, with many of them being mounted on platforms decorated with quilting patterns. Some have quilting patterns worked into their coats and feathers. A group of Jim Shore deer with colorful banners add a Christmas theme to the collection. Jim Shore collectibles are desirable and affordable accents for the home. The line doesn’t stop at figurines, but also includes mats, flags, Christmas ornaments, outdoor decorations, even tableware. The pieces are so attractive that you’d expect them to be expensive. But you can own one of the stunning 10” Jim Shore angels for about $40 or any of a large selection of smaller pieces for under $15. The “Reindeer With Blue Swirls,” one of the nicest of the Jim Shore deer, is just under $25. For limited edition pieces, of course, the value will only go up in time, and if you’re looking for older discontinued Jim Shore collectibles, you’ll find clubs and collectors on the internet. It’s easy to see why lots of people are eager to acquire more, especially Jim Shore angels and animals, but knowing how beautiful they are, it’s hard to imagine anyone actually letting one go.
