Whimsiclay Cats
Have you ever met one of the Whimsiclay cats? If you have, you won’t have forgotten it. These ceramic figurines created by Amy Lacombe are the ultimate in pampered kitties. They’re decorated with flowers, wrapped in colorful robes, covered with crystal snowflakes or decked out in other fanciful trimmings. Their adorable pouty faces look as though they’re about to blow you a kiss, and each and every one of them has unique whiskers tipped with bright ceramic balls. Amy Lacombe started creating Whimsiclay cats in the 1990’s, giving them her own unique style that people love. They gained popularity first in England and by 2001 they had become cherished collectibles. Other Whimsiclay figurines have followed the cats: dogs, rabbits, even skunks, but the cats are still stealing the show. “Mara,” for example, is a “Garden Cat.” A large yellow flower—possibly a sunflower—has draped itself elegantly over her back. She is looking back over her shoulder at a beautiful ladybug riding on her arching tail. Like all Whimsiclay cats, she has whiskers with large ceramic balls on the ends. Mara’s are golden yellow, matching the center of the flower. A typical size for Whimsiclay figurines, she is about five and a half inches tall. Other groupings in the Whimsiclay figurines include “Fancy Felines,” “Feline Classics,” “Love Cats,” and “Glamour Puss Cats.” All of the cats and other animal figurines are imaginative and unique. These groupings of friends in the Whimsiclay cats may inspire you to build a collection around a certain theme. It might be any of the themes already mentioned, or Christmas figurines, or Hallowe’en Cats—the “Punkin Candy Dish” is irresistible: is that a cat or a pumpkin? To see the huge variety of Whimsiclay figurines that Amy Lacombe has created, all you have to do is get online. Internet shops in England and the United States carry them and many of the pieces are pictured on various sites. They’re priced to make it easy to build your collection: “Punkin Candy Dish” is priced at around $22 US, while Mara sells for just $20. Some of the more ornate Whimsiclay cats are $25, while “minis” are less than $10. Like real cats, there’s one (or more) for every cat lover. Internet vendors often have a larger stock than local shops, and many will acquire one of the Whimsiclay cats for you if they don’t have the one you want. Then, they’ll ship your charming cat right to your door. What could be easier? If you haven’t met one of the cats, it’s time you did—and chances are that when you do, you’ll want to take it home, just like real pampered kitties.
